Long time no updates, I've been doing a lot of personal things since the last one of these, but it's good to be back.
MediaWiki
Sometime within April, we will be updating to the current version of MediaWiki. I've been slowly gaining more motivation to work on my projects, which I'm excited about.
This also includes learning how to make MediaWiki extensions, and as a stretch, replacing the comments extension with something that isn't broken.
Political Messaging
Especially recently, there has been increased political messaging on the wiki and the Screamercord. This makes sense, as virtually anything can become political upon closer examination.
This has led me to consider a global policy regarding political messaging, summarized as follows:
Personal Endorsements: Anyone can make any personal endorsement. For example, if you want to say "Vote for Mark Carney" or "Vote for the Leopards Eating People's Faces Party," you are free to do so.
Brand-based Endorsements: Endorsements made by the wiki itself should only relate to issues that directly impact the wiki or its users (such as supporting Section 230). For instance, many users identify as LGBTQIA+ and face pressure to remain closeted, so a message like "Happy Pride Month" is entirely appropriate. Similarly, recognizing "Autism Acceptance Month" is permissible for the same reason.
Spring Cleaning and Soyjak leftovers
At the current moment, a pre-ownership change version of the entire soyjak wiki and many soyjak.party related archives are still located on this server.
Within the next couple of weeks, the remaining leftovers will be removed including:
- The Soyjak Wiki (currently inaccessible, this will not affect the current wiki, which is owned by Froot)
- The classic sharty archives (
sp2021.soyjak.wiki sp2022.soyjak.wiki sp2023.soyjak.wiki)
- The soychan archive
- The shunker archive (bunker.soyjak.wiki)
- The soyjak wiki curated file host (files.soyjak.wiki, currently inaccessible)
Archival and preservation are huge priorities, and none of this is lost to time; it's all on the web archive or anywhere else. This is being done to free up a bunch of space on the server. No hard date, but they'll be gone soon.
Maximizing Profits, Cutting Losses, etc
I have to be a good little businessman and look into expenses. This won't negatively impact how the wiki operates; instead, it aims to streamline operations and tidy up backend infrastructure, making it look less like your bedroom.
I'll be trimming some unnecessary expenses, intending to reduce about $50 a month across all current web projects combined.
As the megacorporations say, it's about "optimizing efficiency, reducing overhead, and enhancing value."
Selling my soul to AI
This will become more apparent tomorrow...
